Being a fitness coach, I can guarantee that high-quality weight plates are among the few things you should never feel buyer’s remorse about.

That’s because poorly crafted plates not only deteriorate quickly and are likely to cause damage to your flooring, but their slightly shifting weight can add up, potentially impacting your muscle development and causing imbalances during lifts.

To help you avoid these issues, my team spent a month and a half testing some of the most popular weight plates on the market and in local gyms, so we’ll give you a rundown of the absolute best ones.

This 2.0 version of collared Rouge’s weight plate has a gloss-matte-gloss finish that holds up better than most plates we’ve tested.

These colored and thin bumper plates allow you to identify them quickly and load your bar just as fast.

After putting them to the test, we’ve noticed that they bounce way less, which makes them safer and reduces setup time between the lifts (during drop sets).

A hole size of 50.40 mm and steel disc inserts contribute to keeping weight plates in place firmly.

Rogue Fitness says the bumpers must be within +/- 15 grams of the indicated weight; otherwise, they will replace them for free.

The only drawback we can single out is that on some rare occasions, the center steel hub causes the plates to rub against the sleeves, creating a slight noise.

Facts:

  • Plate Diameter : 450 mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 2.12”
  • Warranty : 5 Years
Pros
  • They have a precise weight tolerance of +/- 1% to ensure accurate weightlifting
  • They have a sleek, color-coded design that makes it easy to identify different weights
  • One of the most durable bumper plates on the market
  • Rogue offers free shipping for this product
Cons
  • Plates can sometimes create a slight noise

A colored virgin rubber makes plates easy to organize and safe for the gym environment. The colors also make lifting more fun.

Raised flanges make lifting the bumper plates from a flat position or carrying them while holding the outer edges easier.

Our test showed that, unlike urethane weight plates, these bumper plates are easy to handle even with sweaty hands.

They have a reasonable price, which fits most, and hence are one of the most popular bumpers on the market.

However, we noticed that after two weeks of usage, most bumper plates started to look a bit weathered.

Facts:

  • Plate Diameter : 450mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 2.36”
  • Warranty : 25-55 LB for 3 years; 10-15 LB for 90 days
Pros
  • Outer edges make the bumper plates easy to lift and carry
  • Offer features rarely seen in economic plates
  • They look fun
Cons
  • Some plates scuff easily

Echo bumper plates are a black version of the Rogue’s aforementioned plates.

They contain stainless steel inserts wrapped in virgin rubber, eliminating bouncing and protecting surrounding equipment and floors.

Our investigation demonstrated that they have outstanding durability and resistance to scuffs and scratches, and, like most Rogue plates, they have an extremely tight weight tolerance, ensuring that you can trust the weight you are lifting.

However, some of my powerlifting colleagues were annoyed that they couldn’t fit more than 480 lbs. of these plates on the bar.

Facts:

  • Plate Diameter : 450mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 2.4”
  • Warranty : 25-55 LB for 90 days; 10-15 LB for 3 years
Pros
  • Good durability and resistance to scruffs
  • Minimal bounce, which allows safer and more controlled lifting
  • High level of accuracy in terms of weight, which allows for more precise and consistent weightlifting
Cons
  • The maximum you can put on the bar is less than 500 LB

Made of durable cast iron, these weight plates are built to last and provide stability during use.

The smooth, matte finish gives them a professional look, and the raised numbers and letters make them easy to identify.

Drawing from our experience, one of the major benefits of this weight plate is that it is designed to fit snugly on Olympic barbells, ensuring a secure and well-balanced workout.

We also had no issues maintaining the form during the workout and found it well-balanced with consistent weight distribution.

These metal plates are also reasonably priced, making them an excellent value for those on a budget.

However, as with all cast iron plates, we found people complaining about rust in reviews, so you should be careful to maintain it properly.

Facts:

  • Plate Diameter : 444.5mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 2”
  • Warranty : 2-year warranty
Pros
  • Durable cast iron plates provide stability and longevity
  • Fits snugly on Olympic barbells, ensuring a secure and well-balanced workout
  • Raised numbers and letters for easy identification
Cons

These bumper plates are made of high-density rubber, which allows them to be dropped without causing damage to the floor or the plates themselves.

This makes them a popular choice for CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting.

As with Rogue’s colored plates, they also have a color coding system that, based on our observations, makes the weight of each plate easy to identify.

However, they are slightly less accurate in weight than the steel weight plates or the competition’s bumper plate options.

Facts:

  • Diameter : 444.5 mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 2.9”
  • Warranty : 3-year warranty
Pros
  • Made of high-density rubber, these durable plates can easily withstand drops
  • Ideal for high-intensity workouts
  • Color coding system for easy identification of weight
Cons
  • These rubber-weight plates are slightly less accurate in weight than steel plates

These bumper plates come in a wide range of weights, from 10 lbs. to 45 lbs., allowing a customized workout experience.

They also feature a convenient color-coding system.

Made from recycled rubber, these bumper plates are a more eco-friendly option compared to other ones.

However, recycled rubber gives them a lower density, which, based on our firsthand experience, results in lower durability in the long run.

They are more affordable than other premium options, but their lower density may not be suitable for frequent or heavy usage.

Facts:

  • Diameter : 444.5 mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 3.3”
  • Warranty : No warranty
Pros
  • Made of recycled rubber, which makes them eco-friendly
  • Affordable price compared to other premium options
  • Wide range of weights, from 10 lbs. to 45 lbs
Cons
  • Lower density can make the bumper plate less durable in the long run

These plates also come in a range of weights and feature a color-coding system like the abovementioned options.

Since they are constructed with high-density rubber, these plates are both durable and resistant.

Our team discovered through the use of this product that they can be safely dropped without causing damage to the floor or other equipment.

However, for the same reason, they are unsuitable for outdoor use and are exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, which can deteriorate the rubber.

It’s worth mentioning that the bumper plates we ordered had lots of raised rubber bumps along the edges of the plate, so we understand why many people complain that the plates’ cosmetics are often lagging.

Being this affordable, you couldn’t expect a product without any imperfections.

Facts:

  • Diameter : 450.8 mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 3”
  • Warranty : 2-year warranty
Pros
  • High-density rubber construction makes them durable and resistant
  • They come in a wide range of weights
  • They are reasonably priced
Cons
  • Often has annoying imperfections

Durable weight plate, made from cast iron supported with a black baked enamel finish, preventing corrosion and rust forming.

The 1-inch center hole in the metal plates allows for universal compatibility with any barbell with a diameter of 1 inch or less.

These cast iron weight plates also feature convenient design elements such as three openings with handle strips for easy grip and KG and LB labels for easy identification.

Our findings show that they are one of the most affordable plate options on the market but may not be suitable for those with limited strength and mobility.

Facts:

  • Diameter : 450.8 mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 3”
  • Warranty : 2-year warranty
Pros
  • Durable and sturdy standard metal plates
  • They have a smooth finish for easy cleaning and rust resistance
  • They have a machined center hole that ensures a snug and secure fit on standard barbells
Cons

An old-school deep-dish design gives these plates a vintage look.

Our research indicates that, except for aesthetics, this design increases the plate’s surface area, which minimizes the damage to the surroundings when dropped.

The cast iron makes them sturdy, and the electrically applied coating makes these traditional plates more corrosion-resistant.

They are well-priced metal plates that come in a wide range of weights. The downside we noted is that some plates had weight tolerance issues.

Facts:

  • Diameter : 407.98 mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 1.89”
  • Warranty : 2-year warranty
Pros
  • Come in a wide range of weights
  • Smooth e-coating
  • Well-price for iron plates
Cons
  • Weight tolerance issues with some plates.

CAP is a manufacturer that has been in the fitness industry for almost 30 years.

This time they made budget weight plates (virtually weight plates cost a dollar a pound) made of cast iron with a 2-inch center hole to fit an Olympic bar.

These cheap iron plates also have three grip holes for easy and safe use.

You can find CAP plates online in singles or pairs.

However, despite the satisfying semi-gloss finish, upon testing this product, we observed instances of scuffed and chipped plate coating.

Facts:

  • Diameter : 450.85 mm
  • 45LB Plate Width : 1.5”
  • Warranty : 1-month warranty
Pros
  • Raised grip design for safer and more secure handling
  • Fits standard 2-inch Olympic bars
  • Budget-friendly iron plates
Cons
  • Quite fragile for Olympic weight plates

How Do I Choose a Weight Plate for My Home Gym?

A person online shopping on her phone at a gym

To choose a weight plate for your home gym, consider the size, quantity, brand, hole size, material, and price.

Here, I’ll suggest what you should watch for when choosing the best weight plates for your gym.

Even though it largely depends on the type of exercise you want to perform, there are some general rules you should consider.

Material

As you read earlier, weight plates are usually made of either rubber, iron, or a combination of both.

Even though iron and steel plates are the most durable, if you drop metal weight plates, they can get quite loud or even cause damage to home gym flooring or body parts.

On the other hand, rubber plates are quieter, safer for the workout environment, and more resistant to wear and tear [1]. Yet, they are also more expensive.

"Bumper plates are the backbone of functional fitness and Olympic weightlifting, allowing athletes to train with intensity and safety."

- Gregg Glassman, Founder of CrossFit

Size & Quantity

CTA of Size & Quantity

As weight plates come in various sizes, from small 1.25 LB plates to large 45 LB plates.

You should consider what plates and how much you’ll need for your specific workout routine (to reach your desired fitness level).

If you want to perform heavy lifting, you should pay attention to the width of the plates; the smaller the width, the more weight plates can be stacked on the bar.

Also, for convenience, you should always opt for colored plates to spare you from calculating and finding adequate weights in the middle of your sets and reps.

Related Article: How Many Weight Plates to Buy for Your Home Gym

"Colored weight plates not only add a pop of color to your gym, but also make it easier to quickly identify and grab the right weight for your workout."

- Dave Castro, CrossFit Director of Training

Remember that most weightlifting exercises require multiple plates on each side of the barbell (or dumbbell), so every company should sell weight plates in pairs.

Hole Size

Ensure the hole size (collar opening) of the weight plates you opt for is compatible with the barbell and dumbbell you plan to use.

They must fit snuggly; if the openings on weight plates are too small, that renders them useless, and if they are too big, that makes them dangerous to use (as they could slip off the barbell during a workout).

Brand and Price

A person at the gym looking at a weight plate on a barbell

Look for the best weight plates from reputable fitness equipment brands known worldwide for making high-quality, durable equipment.

Try to focus on the specialized brands that manufacture sports equipment and avoid those that make a broad spectrum of products.

Also, unless you have plans to become a professional powerlifter, there’s no need to blow your budget on calibrated weight plates.

Calibrated steel plates, Olympic plates, or other types of competition plates are designed to be accurate within 10 grams.

Nevertheless, great weight plates from reputable brands can be expensive but are worth the investment in the long run (they usually give a warranty period of several years as well).

FAQs

Yes, bumper plates are better for a home gym. For home gym conditions, they are safer, quieter, more durable, and more comfortable to use. The bumper plates are the best weight plates for any exercise where barbells are repeatedly picked up and dropped.
