Bonnie Bunyau Gustin: Eyeing Gold at 2023 Asian Para Games
World Record holder and national powerlifting champ Bonnie Bunyau Gustin is gunning for gold at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. It is his shot at redemption after a silver finish in the 65kg category at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia.
“I hope the colour of the medal will be gold in Hangzhou and apart from winning the gold I also hope to maintain my status and ranking.
With my latest performance, I am confident of performing well,” he said.
But Bonnie knows it won’t be a walk in the park, especially with formidable powerlifters from the host nation.
Bonnie’s recent performance at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Dubai was nothing short of sensational.
He bagged gold and smashed his own World Powerlifting Record in the men’s up to 72 kg category.
He started with a whopping 210 kg lift, almost thrice his body weight, and ended with a new world record of 231 kg.
Despite a left shoulder injury, Bonnie is undeterred. He’s focused on his mission to win gold in Hangzhou and his fitness preparations for the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.
Meanwhile, K.M. Rajendran, the 2023 Asian Para Games Chef-de-Mission, said the medal target for the Asian Para Games will be announced closer to the event.
“We have had a meeting to discuss the medal target but we will continue to monitor the training and preparation of athletes before making the announcement,” he said.
