T Kannan, the 40-year-old strongman from Kanniyakumari, is no stranger to challenges. From pulling heavy vehicles to lifting massive stones, Kannan’s strength is awe-inspiring.

His dedication to the sport earned him a silver medal in the 85 kg category at the World Strongman Games in Punjab in February 2023.

Now, he’s set his sights on the Arnold Classic Europe & Fitness Sports Games in Madrid, Spain, next month.

Hailing from Thamaraikuttivilai near Nagercoil, Kannan, an MA graduate, has been flexing his muscles since his teenage years.

Now, he’s preparing for the under-80 category at the international competition, training relentlessly with a regimen that includes the Iceland cross, log-lift for reps, Farmer’s Carry, dumbbells, and ball-to-shoulder exercises.

Despite his impressive track record, Kannan is facing a hurdle that even his strength can’t overcome – securing sponsorship to attend the competition.

Kannan said he is the first person in Tamil Nadu’s history to qualify for the international Arnold Classic Strongman competition in a foreign country.

He can bring laurels to the country if the state government can cover his expenses for participating in the event.

“I practice daily for at least two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening. I focus on exercise routines such as Iceland cross, log-lift for reps, Farmer’s Carry, dumbbells, and ball-to-shoulder exercises during my preparation for the competition,” he added.

Kannan’s feats of strength are already legendary. He’s in the Cholan Book of World Records for carrying a 370-kg car for 25 meters and pulling a 13.5-tonne heavy vehicle for a distance of 110 meters.

Now, he’s hoping to add another accolade to his name, if he can just get the sponsorship he needs to compete.
