Hawaii’s own Subiono brothers, Kaeo and Kulani, made waves at this year’s CrossFit Games, the fitness world’s equivalent of the Olympics.

The brothers, aged 16 and 14 respectively, both ranked in the top ten of their age groups, stoking the flames of their friendly rivalry.

“I’d like to say I’m the fittest,” Kaeo quipped, while Kulani, who placed fourth in the 14-15 age group and aced the clean and jerk lift, humbly conceded, “I think it might be him.”

The CrossFit Games were a dream come true for Kulani.

“Hitting that PR and combine that with being on the big stage at the CrossFit Games, it’s unimaginable. It’s amazing!” he exclaimed.

Kaeo, who ranked ninth in the 16-17 age group, relished the deadlift and rope climb event, describing it as his favorite.

The Subiono brothers hail from a family of CrossFitters. Their parents owned two CrossFit gyms in Oahu before relocating to Austin, Texas, where they opened another.

The brothers, who are homeschooled, also coach at their family’s gym, Ku Mana CrossFit. “Our dad basically mixes the traditional academic stuff while also teaching us how to run the business,” Kulani explained.

Despite their move to the mainland in 2018, the Subiono brothers maintain strong ties to their Hawaiian roots, returning annually to reconnect with friends and family.

“We have a lot of friends and family still there that continue to support us and share their mana and their love, and just give us their energy,” Kaeo said.

The brothers’ dedication to CrossFit is unwavering, training six hours a day, five days a week.

“It’s actually a really good thing that we have each other because there’s no shortage of training partners, and you’re always going to need someone to push you in every workout,” Kulani said.

For the Subiono family, faith is the bedrock of their lives. Kaeo and Kulani believe they have a purpose on earth, and right now, that purpose is to excel in CrossFit.
