North-West University’s (NWU) Vanderbijlpark Campus bodybuilding team has once again flexed their muscles at the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) National Championships in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, bagging several top spots.

Mandlakayise Jonga stole the show, clinching the overall winner title in the Senior Men’s Physique category.

Moses Paneng and Mthokozisi Zuma also made their mark, securing third and sixth places respectively.

Ayanda Piyo flexed his way to the top in the Senior Man Classic Physique category, showing off the fruits of his fitness journey.

In the Senior Men’s Bodybuilding category, Lehlohonolo Mnisi and Simpiwe Hlengethwa showed their mettle, placing sixth for those under 70kg and fourth for those under 90kg.

Xolani Mtande, a junior bodybuilder under 23, took a commendable third place.

The ladies weren’t left behind. Felicia Maphumolo and Lufuno Matodzi made it to the top 10 in the Wellness Division, while Keagile Lefeka shone in the Lady Beach Bikini category.

Adding another feather to their cap, Mandlakayise and Ayanda have been chosen to flex their muscles for South Africa in Spain.

This comes on the heels of the team’s stellar performance at the 2023 National University Sports South Africa championship, where they bagged the top spot for the fifth time in a row.

Team coach Raphael Ntumba couldn’t hide his pride, stating, “Their recent victory is a testament to their commitment and hard work. The team has proven time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with in the world of bodybuilding. Their dedication, hard work, and perseverance have paid off. I am very proud.”

Dr Sean McCallaghan, director for student life on the campus, echoed Ntumba’s sentiments, saying, “Their commitment to their sport is admirable, and it’s no surprise they’ve achieved such an impressive victory.

“Their win is not only a personal triumph but also a victory for their university. It’s great to see such hardworking and dedicated individuals being recognised and celebrated for their accomplishments. They are an inspiration to us all.”
